Largs & Cumbrae

We’d have to start by mentioning our current home base – where we work from the boat and from Largs Sailing Club’s clubhouse whilst we are aboard but not cruising, for periods of up to three weeks throughout the year.

Largs Yacht Haven has both a branch of Scott’s restaurant and the Bosun’s Cafe on site, together with the well supplied Largs Chandlers and alternative maintenance and brokerage organisations on site; many other specialist contractors for rigging, electronics, etc are also available in the local area.

From the path between Largs Yacht Haven and Largs town

There is an excellent tarmac path along the waterfront all the way into Largs town, and a promenade walk onwards to the far end of the town’s water frontage; various pubs, hotels, restaurants and shops are available in Largs, which is also served by a railway station with regular services to Glasgow Central. Immediately across the road from the Yacht Haven there is Kelburn Castle & Country Park , with mostly woodland walks up a sheltered glen; other great walks are available within a short driving time. Suffice to say that on the summer evenings and the weekend days when we choose not to take the boat out, whilst living aboard, there is plenty in this area to keep us entertained.

Anchored off Millport pier in April, before the seasonal moorings are laid

Millport Bay is just 30 minutes or so away from our marina berth, and during the season has a number of visitors moorings (with pick up lines – free of charge, courtesy of North Ayrshire Council) available in the western part of the bay off the pier; the eastern bay is off a sandy beach and has good anchoring in sand. Both bays are favourites, even for a summer midweek evening after work, returning next morning before work.
